Nick Hakim and Roy Nathanson

Roy and Nick’s early pandemic collaboration resulted in the album SMALL THINGS. The creative process behind the record was an organic one: Hakim read some of Nathanson’s poetry which in turn inspired several chords that became the foundation of of their collaboration. Nathanson puts it best: “it seems we were lucky. Looks like we got ourselves on the moon the old fashioned way […] long story shortish, Nick finally came by my house in Flatbush and we went down to my musty old basement and I handed him some poems from my new book. And just like that, Nick just stood behind my old fender Rhodes played the chords for ‘Moonman‘ and ‘New Guy to Look At‘ and I played along and that was that. ”

Bill Ware and John Murchison’s collaboration…

Also an early pandemic collaboration, Bill Ware created his original live score for the 1926 silent film, The Adventures of Prince Achmed, around the haunting pulse of the guimbri, a traditional musical instrument, also known as the sinter which is a three-stringed, skin-covered, bass-plucked lute played by the Gnawa people of Northern Africa, and expertly played by the much sought after master musician John Murchison.  Bill also created an original score for The Spanish Dancer, inspired by John’s masterful playing of the Oud, with a strong rhythmic drive and a propulsive underlying beat. Stick around after the benefit to hear Bill and John explore themes from their musical collaborations in this unique duo performance.

The event is presented by Jazz Passengers Music Projects, Inc., a Brooklyn-based nonprofit organization dedicated to community building through the transformative power of music, word, and image.
