5PM Porch Concerts – Music Program for Youth
In a normal year, local organizations in Brooklyn, like the Flatbush Development Corporation, offer summer programs for neighborhood kids, but in 2020 these programs were cancelled due to the pandemic. Many children were left stuck at home without anything to do in the summer and without financial means to pay for the few remaining summer learning options, most of which were outside of the city.
We wanted to create some sense of community, while being sensitive to the risks of COVID-19. We decided to have all of the lessons take place on the same day around the same time. Additionally, at the end of the day of lessons, children, families and teachers would gather socially distanced in the streets outside Roy Nathanson’s home for a brief public performance. All children learned the same five songs, the same songs that we played at the daily porch concerts at the start of the pandemic.
The goal of this program is to bring music instruction back to the streets. To make learning music communal and joyful, to emphasize performance, spontaneity and accessibility. In our teaching we emphasized ensemble playing, learning by ear, improvisation and learning shared repertoire, specifically songs. Our hope is that students involved understand music making as an act of bringing life to a community.
